Transportation
Getting you where you need to go. Across the state. Across the country. Across the globe. By air, by ground, or by water. Businesses need to move their products and their people. Quickly, affordably, effectively.
They need to be faster, smarter, better than their competition.
Michigan's Great Southwest makes all of this possible. With major air, water, rail, and highway routes converging in one location, we're bringing business to a whole new level of efficiency.
Highways
A key transportation advantage in our region is a highway system that provides easy access to Midwest markets. Forming the backbone of this network is Interstate 94, the major east/west highway linking our community to major metropolitan areas like Chicago, Detroit, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids. With these connections, businesses are able to provide efficient, just-in-time delivery to customers in all directions.
Market Connections:
- I-94 to Detroit/Chicago/Kalamazoo
- I-196 to Grand Rapids
- US-31 to South Bend
Other nearby highways:
- I-80 and I-90 to Gary and Chicago
- M-63 to South Haven and Holland
- M-140 to Niles
- M-139 to Berrien Springs
- US 33
- US 12

Port Development
The approval of river barge traffic has prompted a focus on the further development of our port. As barge traffic offers one of the most cost-efficient means of transporting materials, we expect to see an increased interest in the area on the part of businesses reliant on this mode of transportation. Currently, there is a port located in Benton Harbor/St. Joseph.
Proximity to Major Markets
Within a 500-mile radius of Michigan's Great Southwest, you'll find 54% of all the nation's manufacturing, 48% of all retail sales, 54% of the nation's business payroll, and 65% of Canada's GNP. With this strategic location to major markets, residents of the area enjoy the benefits of a big city, yet live and work in small communities.
