Economic Development Project Continues to Move For
Harbor Shores Project Announces Event to Commemorate Major Milestone
The Harbor Shores Project is on schedule to reach another major milestone in the summer of 2010 as The Golf Club at Harbor Shores, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, will celebrate its official grand opening with a special event on Tuesday, August 10th. Jack Nicklaus, whose accolades as a golf course designer parallel a legendary career that includes a record 18 professional major championships, will join friends and fellow greats Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Johnny Miller for an 18-hole skins format with rotating two-man teams. The event is titled "The Champions for Change Tournament."
Golf Legend Jack Nicklaus said, “The Harbor Shores Champions for Change event is a great opportunity to highlight how golf is being used as a vehicle for social and economic revitalization, particularly in the Benton Harbor community.”
Harbor Shores serves as a catalyst for ongoing community transformation. The non-profit resort project is designed to stimulate increased tax revenue, create jobs and generate new consumer spending.
Cornerstone Alliance, a non-profit investor driven economic development organization, serving the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph community, is one of the partners in the development. Cornerstone Alliance Chairman of the Board Ken Kozminski said, "We are very pleased to see the Harbor Shores project continuing to progress despite numerous obstacles including the nation's recession. The grand opening of The Golf Club at Harbor Shores is a true milestone for our community. It celebrates the revitalization of land that was once obsolete into a beautiful and pristine asset that creates endless opportunities for our communities."
Cornerstone Alliance President Wendy Dant Chesser said, "It is an honor to be a part of such a transformational project. Our community is very fortunate to have the Harbor Shores project taking place and progressing our community. The project provides us an outstanding tool to use in business recruitment and retention efforts, assists in increasing the area's tax base and will result in increased consumer spending."
Chesser added, "We are very pleased at the progression of the project as it has only been officially under development for three years now. Residential construction is underway, interest in the residential opportunities is steadily increasing, we continue to receive strong developer interest in other aspects of the project, the project has had a significant impact on the environment, the golf course is opening and much more. We are truly looking forward to what the future holds for our community thanks to Harbor Shores."
