Local Elected Officials React
Benton Harbor, MI—Wednesday, May 26, 2010— Local Elected Officials reacted to the announcement of the Senior PGA Championship coming to the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph community following a live announcement from Parker, Colorado. It was announced that Whirlpool Corporation's KitchenAid Brand will serve as the presenting sponsor of the tour from 2011-2014. The prestigious event will take place at The Golf Club at Harbor Shores, an 18 hole public Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, located in Benton Harbor/St. Joseph, Michigan in 2012 and 2014. The announcement was shared locally via a live feed.
The announcement is positive news for the entire state and southwest Michigan region. Estimates show that communities that host a Senior PGA Championship, the oldest major in senior golf, enjoy an average of over $22 million in economic impact as a result of the event taking place.
Berrien County Community Development Director Dan Fette shared, "This is great news for our county. When the County first got involved in this project, it was our hope that someday Harbor Shores would garner this type of national attention. Five years later, we’re seeing the benefits come to fruition.”
Benton Harbor Mayor Pro-Tem Marcus Muhammad said, "This is great news for the City of Benton Harbor. As we are working our way through rough economic conditions, opportunities like this are a once in a lifetime chance to give both our community and our residents a boost in the right direction."
City of St. Joseph Mayor Bob Judd shared, "We look forward to the chance to have the eyes of the world on our communities. It provides us the opportunity to share the many amenities that make our community and the entire region... Michigan's Great Southwest."
Benton Charter Township Treasurer Debbie Boothby said, "As the community that serves as one of the retail hubs for the area, we are very excited about the possibilities this creates. It will bring visitors as well as potential investors to the area."
Harbor Shores is a 530-acre mixed use real estate development with an estimated twenty year build out. It is located in the City of Benton Harbor, City of St. Joseph and Benton Charter Township in Berrien County, Michigan.
