Transforming the Community for Years to Come

The Benton Harbor/St. Joseph area has been on the path to revitalization for several years now thanks to HS Map community and economic development efforts. However, much work remains to be done in order to create a world-class community.

Many of the community organizations responsible for these initiatives have partnered together to initiate the Harbor Shores Community Redevelopment project. Harbor Shores builds upon many past projects while creating additional opportunities in which area residents can engage. The very foundation of the initiative is a Community Benefits Plan that defines, directs and memorializes a commitment to bring change for all residents through literacy, workforce development, home ownership, or business assistance. The goal of the project is to be the enabler to continue economic, environmental and social/cultural transformation that is already under way.

Harbor Shores is a 530-acre, mixed use development spanning parts of Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, and Benton Charter Township. It has been initiated to revitalize the community while protecting its natural beauty. Plans call for residential units, commercial space, marinas, up to two hotels, a conference center, an indoor water park, an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, the Midwest's first Nicklaus Signature Golf Academy, 83 acres of new parks, green space and public waterfront access points as well as walking and bike trails along with various other amenities.

This development is a cooperative effort between The Alliance for World-Class Communities, Cornerstone Alliance, Whirlpool Foundation, the cities of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Benton Charter Township, Berrien County, the state of Michigan and others.

Harbor Shores Discovery Center

What is the Discovery Center?
The Discovery Center is focused on "discovering" the lifestyle, amenities, and real estate opportunities that Harbor Shores will offer. The centerpiece of the Discovery Center is an 8' by 6' scale model of the entire Harbor Shores development, including the proposed build out of the golf course. The model is complimented by color graphics of lifestyle images and artist renderings of the project. The Discovery Center introduces the four Districts within the development, the Golf District, Harbor District, River District, and the Shores District. Additionally, the center offers details on the various proposed residential developments.

Who should use the Discovery Center?
Individuals interested in potentially purchasing a residential lot are encouraged to stop by the center to learn more.

Hours of Operation
Hours of operation for the center are closed Monday and Tuesday Wednesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 4 p.m.

What is the Transformation Center?
The Transformation Center is focused on the transformational and human development aspects of the project. The center tells the story of transformation in Benton Harbor from its beginnings to the present highlighting benefits to the community. Visitors will experience the history and transformation of Benton Harbor through videos, graphics, a scale model of the Harbor Shores project and knowledgeable staff. The Transformation Center explains how the Harbor Shores project and related Community Benefit Programs are transforming the lives of local residents, creating new opportunities for the region

Whether you are seeking information about or enrollment in one of the Community Benefits Programs, want to become a program volunteer, want to learn about the Harbor Shores project or want to learn more about Michigan's Great Southwest, you will find the information at the Harbor Shores Transformation Center at Benton Harbor.

Hours of Operation
The hours for the center are Tuesday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and closed Sunday and Monday. The Center will be open 10 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Art Hop nights.
