Education

With several area universities and colleges and award-winning public and private schools,  Michigan’s Great Southwest offers up a veritable buzzing hive of learning. Our area is in close proximity to major universities, award winning colleges, excellent K-12 systems both public and private, you name it….it’s all here.

 

KidsMichigan’s Great Southwest has some of the best students in the state—a reflection of a supportive environment and a solid educational foundation that includes over 15 area public school districts and over 30 private schools, serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade—all of which complement the area’s universities and colleges. School districts range in size from more than 6,300 students to 80 students, providing rich and diverse educational opportunities for our residents. The average pupil/teacher ratio for our county is 20:1 primary, and 22:1 secondary.  According to the US Census Berrien County Enrollment for 2005 was 33,712.

Accomplishments of Local Schools

q  St. Joseph Schools were named one of the top districts in the nation by Expansion
  Management magazine.

q  Bridgman Schools were named as top 100 by Money magazine.

q  Lakeshore Schools completed a $26.4 million building and technology upgrade.

q  Benton Harbor High School has developed a Career Path Curriculum to guide students for
  high school to higher education or gainful employment.

Michigan Average (SAT): 568 Verbal  583 Math

Michigan Average (ACT): 21.5

These are based on 68% of Michigan’s students tested.

 

Universities and Colleges

Students from all over the world attend Michigan’s Great Southwest’s varied institutions of higher LMClearning. Local colleges and universities include: Lake Michigan College, Andrews University, Southwestern Michigan College, Western Michigan University Southwest, and Siena Heights University. 

 

Additionally, Michigan’s Great Southwest is within close proximity to several other colleges and universities.
