Education - K-12

Michigan's Great Southwest has some of the best students in the state -a reflection of a supportive environment and a solid educational foundation that includes over 15 area public school districts and over 30 private schools, serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade - all of which complement the area's seven universities and colleges.

School districts range in size from more than 6,300 students to 80 students, providing rich and diverse educational opportunities for our residents. The average pupil/teacher ratio for our county is 20:1 primary, and 22:1 secondary. Berrien County Enrollment for 1999 was 29,734, with approximately 1,800 graduates.

Accomplishments of Local Schools
  • St. Joseph Schools were named one of the top districts in the nation by Expansion Management magazine.
  • Bridgman Schools were named in the top 100 by Money magazine.
  • Benton Harbor High School developed a Career Path Curriculum bringing business and education together.
  • Lakeshore Schools were #1 in Michigan in MEAP Scholarships the last two years for schools of its size.
  • Approximately 90% of graduates from Lake Michigan Catholic and Michigan Lutheran High School attend college upon graduation.
